The recent passing of Tony Gwynn brought many thoughts to mind right away. Initially of a period of time with baseball that has kind of passed us by. A different breed of players and how appropriate it was that the year he was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame, he went in with Cal Ripken.
The smile is something that never seemed to leave his face and that voice that was so unique that you knew who it was as soon as you heard it. But the thing I will always remember most about Tony was an interview he did not long before he retired.
The reporter asked, “why didn’t you ever leave the Padres for the opportunity of more money and certainly a better chance to win a World Series?” Tony quickly said, “I can’t spend the money I am making now. My kids love their schools and have all their friends here and my wife is involved with the community and we are happy here.”
He finished in true Tony fashion by saying “and man, why would I want to mess all of that up!”
You know the grass may be greener on the other side but, you still have to mow it.
It’s pretty obvious that Tony truly understood that.
