Student Voice: Learn to say no

Over the past few years many parents, more and more over time, have been slacking at their most important job. Taking care of children in today’s society doesn’t seem to be as cherished as what it should be; therefore, the kids are suffering. It is the job of the adult to raise a child who can function properly in society. Unfortunately, some adults are not giving enough effort and don’t know what they’re doing.

The most important thing a parent needs to learn when raising a child is how to say no. Many people don’t want to have to deal with tantrums, so they will give the adolescent whatever he wants. This trains the child to throw a fit to get what he wants. This behavior at home will be mirrored out in public, which embarrasses the parents and is also highly irritating to passersby.

There is a happy medium between being too strict, and not strict enough. If parents are too stern, the child may become rebellious and possibly have some feelings of contempt for the parents when he reaches the later adolescent years. However, if the parents slack and allow their children to do whatever they want, they are raising young people who will take advantage of them.

It is extremely important before becoming a parent to realize that your behavior will be reflected in the child. Only mature adults who have an idea of what they are doing should take on huge responsibilities, since it is the most important job in society, and could create a better or worse future for the world.
