Power is un-American

---- — Congressman Tom Marino has introduced a legislative gem: the plan for a constitutional amendment that would limit congressional term limits to a total of 12 years for both senators or representatives. A recent letter writer claimed that such a change would lessen voters' rights.

It would not do that. Our voter rights are not lessened by the two-term limit on our nation's president. The writer also stated we already have term limits: our system of elections. That, too, is a spurious claim. Our elections don't prevent congressmen from spending a disproportionate amount of taxpayer money in their own districts in order to keep buying their re-election; nor does it prevent sitting congressmen from tinkering with voting districts (gerrymandering) in order to gain a more supportive constituency.

We also know that many congressmen from both parties find ways to clutch political power for decades, until removed by scandal, failing health or actual death. It's time to reaffirm a tradition as old as our nation: Clinging to political power is un-American. Tom Marino's astute proposal would address that problem.
