Tire burner permit

— So DEP will not extend the 45-day review period for the proposed tire burner in White Deer Township because Larson Design found the application to be "in order" and "complete" with supporting data. This sounds like Larson only checked whether all the paperwork was done.

Is that good enough? What about the data itself?

The data in this application is not from an actual pilot plant of the system they propose; they do not list the actual combustion by-products being added to our air, and they don't mention how well their system will work with various kinds of tires or weather conditions. In other words, data was "cherry-picked" and still doesn't support the claims being made. For example, dioxin is only one of many toxic by-products of tire combustion -- and we should believe their untried emission control system will always work perfectly?

A tire burner is a very complex system, and there may not be a single one operating in America right now primarily because of all the problems they have had. Certainly there is no emission data available. Time is needed to carefully examine all aspects of this system, so that our beautiful region is not burdened by permanent effects on our health and well-being.
