My name is Elijah J. Feltman. I am 12-years-old and a member of Boy Scout Troop 415 from Middleburg. I am questioning the closing of the Middleburg recycling drop-off site without offering another convenient location in its place.
Since becoming a Boy Scout, I have helped with the recycling at Middleburg for the past two years. I have helped many people carry their recyclables from their cars to the recycling bins. I have been thanked by many of the elderly for offering my services as some have difficulty get around. I have also been questioned as to why we are not continuing to offer a recycling center within the borough when Middleburg is the county seat. Why is our only other options Freeburg or Penn Township? People have commented -- with the price of gas and distance to travel; recycling will no longer be an option for many in the community. So the results will be larger landfills.
Also, for the many years the Middleburg Boy Scout Troop 415 has used the aluminum cans to help raise money. This money has been used over the years to send boys to National and World Jamborees, high adventure and summer camps. As well as, buying other needed supplies. Without this source of money, we will be forced to ask the community for support through more fundraisers.
It makes me sad that the elderly have to unload their own recycling, landfills will get fuller and I will have to do more fundraising just because this one site will be closing. I don't think the people in charge of this decision realized how it would affect so many lives. I hope that they will reconsider their decision before the last day of recycling in Middleburg on Jan 5., 2013.
