Colonoscopies

Colonoscopies -- not a usual topic of discussion at a dinner party. We tend to shy away from topics such as this even though they save lives and having a casual conversation about the topic could just save the life of someone you love.

Take my father for instance. Yes, I work for the American Cancer Society and our early detection and prevention guidelines are engraved in my head, and for good reason as those guidelines saved my father's life.

I was driving back from a prepared childbirth class when my dad called. When you hear the words "there is something I have to tell you," you instantly think of the worst thing possible.

My father proceeded to tell me that at his annual colonoscopy in July, the doctors removed a cancerous GIST tumor. The tumor had been caught early enough that nothing had spread and my father was declared cancer-free.

My father got to be there for the birth of his first grandson. ! Why? It is simple -- he followed Society guidelines and got his routine colonoscopy. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Take a few minutes today to schedule yours.

Dawn Spuesens,

Selinsgrove
