Letter headline

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Tell an American they cannot have something and they will react. Especially when it is an unalienable right our founders supported. Prohibition did not work on alcohol. Instead it created the underground systems that now deal our illegal drugs.

What happened in Shady Hook was a horrible tragedy. It was because of a sick person who was determined and would have chosen other methods if guns did not exist.

The two biggest tragedies in my life happened because of box cutters on airplanes and a Ryder truck in Oklahoma City.

Making us less safe by taking away or limiting our firearms is not the way to go. There is a reason police and military use certain small arms and high capacity magazines. It is an effective means in dealing with bad people who wish to do harm. If it was not effective, they would lighten their load and carry seven rounds like a New York resident now has to do.

We should have the right to defend ourselves and homes with equal or greater force then the bad guys. Criminals are not limited by any laws. Areas with the strongest gun laws, like Chicago, have some of the worst crime and murder rates.

A criminal casing a house in my rural area has to come to the conclusion "I may get shot several times." If you do not wish to have a gun, fine, but you are safer because any criminal may not know that you are a soft target. Hopefully you have a neighbor that does have a gun and they will probably be faster than 911.

Chris Raker,

Sunbury
