At a recent Selinsgrove Borough Council meeting, borough resident Vincent Stoops accused Selinsgrove Project Incorporated of “wasteful spending” and “intimidation and retaliation.” He asked the borough council not to seek a $60,000 grant to fund the borough’s current Main Street manager position. Stoops, who is also a member of the SPI board, has been very vocal about his concerns of financial wrongdoing by the current board.
SPI board members have their own concerns with Stoops, so much so, that they have asked for additional security at their meetings and may even remove Stoops from the board.
I believe that Selinsgrove Project Inc. has the right idea regarding an additional police presence at their meetings. Those who serve on our community boards should not feel threatened by the public. Mr. Stoops has every right to express his concerns, but he should do it in an appropriate manner.
If our community continues to grow economically, the SPI board needs to work in harmony with each other and the downtown businesses. If the borough council and the SPI organization want to work together they will need to remove all or any problems.
Our community is a great place to live and do business. Let’s hope that our reputation continues despite the action of one community member’s actions.
