Not the deity I know

As a Christian and a Bible scholar, I cannot help but recoil at Claude Mengle’s letter, “Sodom and Gomorrah: 2014” and his character assassination of God.

He paints a picture of a deity unable to discern between the gang rape of two visitors seeking shelter in an ancient desert city and the happy homes of couples living honestly as gays and lesbians today. His fear-soaked warnings point to a God so obsessed with heterosexuality that he is blind to the real threats that face us today — the epidemic abuse of women and girls, rising global poverty, and a planet reeling from the effects of over 100 years of air pollution.

The God I have experienced since I gave my heart to Jesus in 1982 is not one of fear but of wisdom, thoughtfulness, and joy.
