We the People, or the gas industry

— In this election year we should look where our elected officials stand when it involves we the people or huge corporations.

As reported in November our local Congressmen, Mr. Marino and Mr. Barletta, voted for a bill that would bar federal regulations involving natural gas drilling on federal lands. At the same time they voted against a motion that would have drillers disclose what chemicals are used in the fracking process. Their defense for these votes had to do with protecting states’ rights.

At the state level Gov. Corbett wants to allow gas companies to drill under state parks. Corbett created the Marcellous Shale Advisory Committee which is made up of a majority of people who have ties to the oil and gas industry. The committee recommended no severance tax on gas companies and other measures that benefitted the gas industry. As a result Pennsylvania is the only state that has no severance tax. These same committee people are very big contributors to Gov. Corbett’s campaign.

Our governor claimed a victory with the passage of the transportation bill. We do need funds for our roads, but they could have been gotten by putting taxes on corporations, not on the backs of the people who will foot the bill at the gas pump.
