Foreign aid foolishness

Just in case you didn’t get the message: in 2010 we gave $1.4 billion in foreign aid to the same countries we borrow money from. In 2011 and 2012 it was just about the same and in 2013 we went down the same old road.

Truth is stranger than fiction. We give them money and they loan it back to us and we pay interest on our own money. That $1.4 billion handed out in 2010 could go a long way to subsidize industries at home and create jobs. How about some U.S. home aid. Mark Twain is credited with saying “Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of congress. But then I repeat myself.” Will Rogers said, “I don’t make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts.”

Now for more foolishness.

Our country’s foreign aid reminds me of the old saying, rob Peter to pay Paul. Of course they can’t rob Peter so they borrow from him and give it to Paul. Paul thinks this is great and now that he has extra money he loans it back to the government. The government is so deep in debt it will borrow from anyone. Peter, having loaned his money, now needs money so we give him some. So, we borrow money from both Peter and Paul and give it back as foreign aid and we pay them interest on our money.

I see these foreign countries making out like bandits and think I’ll try it. I loan the government some money (I buy government bonds) and sure enough they pay me interest. I ask for my share of the free money and they not only won’t give it to me, they want some of the interest back in taxes.

As a tax-paying citizen of Snyder County I feel this is totally unfair. In order to get my share, I take my five acres and secede from the union. Now, as a foreign country, I no longer have to pay taxes. Seeing all that free money I apply for foreign aid and of course they give it to me. Why not, everybody else gets it.

My neighbors see this and realizing they are supporting me by paying taxes, they complain to Uncle Sam. He tells them he has always given foreign aid and that’s just the way it is. Go figure, and when you do, tell the rest of us. Uncle Sam can’t figure it out either he just keeps doing it. Someone needs to take Uncle Sam aside and explain it to him. If he keeps borrowing money and giving it away he will soon go broke. It sure is goofy; he also subsidizes big oil and big farmers who don’t even farm their land.
