Fix engine

Daily Item

---- — I could not agree more with Midd-West Superintendent Wesley Knapp's recent "Superintendent's Corner" article on evaluating teachers. Very well expressed, superintendent!

And on and on it goes.

How to motivate students to perform better as students. Cyber schools, charter schools, vouchers, teacher merit-pay approach, and yes, teacher evaluation schemes.

Some schools in this area are targeted as "not performing up to standard," or underachieving with regard to their academic goals. Could there be an underlying cause that is not particularly apparent at this time?

Has anyone interviewed teachers and students in regard to discerning problems that might be leading to a school's poor rating?

The caboose might evidence poor academic achievement on the part of the students, but let's check the engine for problems "up front."

I have a strong feeling that that the engine needs modification and repair. What think you?
