Latest ideological production

Now that we are finished with a second propaganda blitz by the Downtown Dragons in opposition to the approved plan to build a new high school on the Newman Property adjacent to Kelly Elementary School, it seems an appropriate time to point out how parochial the thinking of this group is, both geographically and conceptually.

Even the name they have taken for themselves reveals the narrowness of their interests, which are entirely borough-centered, even though students from the borough represent only 13 percent of the Lewisburg Area School District population.

But they are parochial conceptually as well, as Trey Casimir recently admitted in these pages when he wrote that “sustainability, transportation and town planning are not secondary issues,” but are “the only issues.”

As anyone who has attended any of the many community and school board meetings devoted to this issue for the last six years would know, the facilities planning that has moved steadily forward has been based on a clear and well thought-out educational plan, rather than on the secondary issues that are the only interests the Downtown Dragons have acknowledged. Fortunately we have the benefit of the broader perspectives of Dave Brown and two recent articulate graduates whose excellent letters should serve as a thorough rebuttal to the latest ideological production of the Downtown Dragons.

Michael Payne,

Lewisburg
