I was pleased to see the thoughtful responses from two Shikellamy students regarding the controversy over a recent “Sex Ed” class at the high school. The back-story to this incident is the fact that a parent expressed concern about a touchy topic and the administrators at Shikellamy High School did not follow up with a response.
Not until the parent reached out to school board members and the local paper did the high school provide a response. In my opinion, the administrators created a bigger issue when they did not validate this parent’s concerns and respond promptly with answers.
If the problem could not be resolved within a day or two, the principal, curriculum coordinator or other school officials should have been in touch on a regular basis until the parent was satisfied. Communication and validation are the keys to managing controversial issues that arise during the school day. Unfortunately, the incident escalated until it “made the paper.”
