My Turn: Wanted: Selinsgrove Alumni

Recently, a group of Selinsgrove Area High School graduates formed an “official” organization through adoption of by-laws, election of officers, scheduled meetings, and planned activities. This now becomes the nucleus of what we hope will become an effective Alumni Association.

Of all the Selinsgrove Area High School Alumni, 97 alumni and friends have joined and began promoting activities. The purpose is designed to enhance the tradition and prestige of alumni of Selinsgrove Area High School. Some goals include:

1. Build friendship and cooperation among alumni of Selinsgrove Area High School,

2. Help SAHS alumni maintain contact with others and  the community,

3. Assist graduation classes preparing for reunions,

4. Host community and school based events providing alumni an opportunity to reconnect with each other and the community,

5. Encourage alumni support of the district’s programs through monetary and in-kind donations to SAHS Seals Legacy Fund.

Here is more of what the association will do for alumni:

Names, graduation years, and contact information will be added to the SASD web-site which hosts the alumni roster. Our intent is for this roster to emerge as the “go-to” site for alumni looking to contact their own class as well as all SAHS graduates. Members will be invited to all alumni events and functions. You will receive the quarterly Alumni Association newsletter “The Seal Barker.” Upon payment of the lifetime membership fee, members receive a magnet and bumper sticker to display on vehicles, refrigerators, etc.  We hope that members will become advocates and spread the word about this exciting endeavor.

Activities, included the first was the “official kick-off” which occurred Saturday morning of the 2013 homecoming weekend with a reception and tour of the high school building. Members in attendance were amazed at the changes and excellent condition of the facility. Alumni taking the tour recommended this event for all SAHS Alumni regardless of graduation year. Activities for the spring and fall of 2014 will a presentation to the 2014 Senior Class at their graduation breakfast/awards presentation, fall homecoming activities, and presentation of the first SAHS Outstanding Alumnus Award. The association asks that you keep your ears and eyes open for upcoming events.

The association is proud to announce creation of the Selinsgrove Area High School Legacy Fund. Including “legacy” in the name means alumni can establish their legacy within their high school by contributing or bestowing money to the District. The Legacy Fund a (5013C) is a “pass through fund” in which designated monies will support education, arts, clubs/activities, athletics, music, facilities, or other components of district. The fund was developed through collaboration with the Central Susquehanna Community Foundation and Selinsgrove Area Community Foundation. We already received “seed” money to begin building the “legacy” of SAHS alumni within their school and community both of which provided the foundation for graduates to become effective members in society.

Finally, we ask all alumni and friends of Selinsgrove Area High School to become a member of their Alumni Association. The Selinsgrove community and school have gone without a unifying organization while neighboring districts and communities can be observed with a source for locating alumni, staging events, and contributing needed funds to their school. SAHS Alumni Association members are eager to establish our own organization to provide the Selinsgrove community an opportunity to demonstrate pride in being a “Seal.”

Eric Rowe is a former school board president of the Selinsgrove Area School District.
