Two letters in the Daily Item on Oct. 24, both by men, declare that the greatest sins against Christianity are those having to do with sex (and implicitly, women): abortions and same-sex marriage.
One letter writer states —¦ American Christians (do not) seek to forbid the construction of Islamic mosques by law …" but ignores the fact that those same American Christians (some of whom are unfortunately running the government) are doing absolutely nothing about the plight of millions of hungry women and children in this country. Nor are they concerned about the poverty of those same women and children (1 in 4 children in American live in poverty), nor do they seem alarmed at the raging epidemic of domestic and gun violence directed against those same women and children.
I will grant that there is horrible global persecution of Christians, especially in Middle Eastern countries which the American media chooses to ignore. But to condone the persecution which exists in this country is hypocritical at least.
How can American Christians continue to ignore the words of Jesus to take care of the widow and the orphan, to welcome children, to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and heal the sick?
