Never too small

---- — The day after Memorial Day I was just leaving the post office, the clerk and I had been discussing the holiday. I mentioned the parade and ceremony we have in Mazeppa and how quaint it still is.

As I walked away the next person said to the clerk, "Mazeppa is too small for a parade and ceremony." I turned around and replied, "No, we aren't."

Her face went beet red with embarrassment as she thought I didn't hear her. Sure the Mazeppa parade has kids on bicycles, veterans on a hay wagon and maybe a citizen with their dog and a child pulling a red wagon. All of this is followed with a speaker at the cemetery and then the Boy Scouts' ice cream social.

But what is at the heart of the holiday is honoring our heroes and that's what Mazeppa does. I welcome anyone to walk our cemetery and see first hand all the markers that honor our servicemen with many from the Civil War.

There are plenty of towns like Mazeppa in this country and no matter the size of the town, they are never too small to take time at Memorial Day to thank those who have served, the ones still protecting our freedoms and especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
