The next deadly addiction may already be in the hands of our children, and before it gets out of control, let’s stop it now. While still in its infancy, the number of electronic cigarette users is gaining momentum. Although these devices appear safer than tobacco cigarettes, they do come with inherit risks. Unfortunately, with fancy marketing, e-cigarettes, which are not regulated, look cool and thus attractive to try. But, the health risks are not so cool.
Electronic cigarettes deliver nicotine to the body. Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical that has been linked to health issues including increased blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration. While some smokers are using electronic cigarettes in an attempt to break away from tobacco, some nonsmokers including underage individuals are taking their first puffs. If you’re
a nonsmoker, this is not a habit you want to start. If you’re a smoker using one to tackle
tobacco use, your next step should eventually be to wean off electronic cigarettes, too.
Our government should take a closer look at e-cigarettes. Regulations are needed, and those who are underage should never be allowed to purchase this product.
