Say positive things in 2014

I know it may be in poor taste, but with 2013 over, I would like to make some New Year’s resolutions for other people.

When writing letters to this newspaper, please refrain from ad hominem attacks, that is, disparaging the character or intelligence of someone you disagree with rather than actually arguing (with logic and facts) against the position or opinion you oppose.

Please stop calling people “socialist,” “communist,”  “Nazi,” or equally explosive labels. In general, try not to be so nasty, and say positive things in addition to the negative.

This is an election year, so I expect there will be lots of political speech; I hope it is more “debate” than “shouting match.”

Peter Whitcopf,

Selinsgrove
