True radicals

It was interesting to read in The Daily Item that one of Congressman Tom Marino’s chief concerns is the increased cost of flood insurance, an increase that has been brought about by the increasing severity of storms with flooding.

This has resulted in massive debt in the flood insurance program. Mr. Marino evidently doesn’t believe people should take the responsibility for paying for insurance that covers the risk of owning a home in a flood zone. Low-cost flood insurance has for too long allowed those who build in floodplains to not take on the full financial risk of their actions.

With the increase warming of the planet’s climate system, we have seen an increase in climate disruption including increased flooding. While further change is already built into the system because of increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, we must act now with great urgency to prevent the worst that climate change will bring. Mr. Marino’s voting record clearly demonstrates that he has far greater concerns for the profits of the oil, gas, and coal corporations than he does for protecting the public from the increasing risk of climate change.

Climate change and disruption is already happening. There is no question the planet is warming and is the result of all the fossil fuels we are burning. If we don’t act, we are condemning our children and grandchildren to consequences that most of us cannot imagine.

Mr. Marino and his party have demonstrated in vote after vote that they are “owned” by the fossil fuel industries, the very industries who have spent millions cast doubt on what the best climate scientists in the world have been telling us. They have spent millions to push their climate disrupting products while fighting all efforts to develop clean energy. Their only moral imperative is that of profit. What is our moral imperative to all future generations?

Mr. Marino, his party, and the fossil fuels industry are true radicals. They wish to change the chemistry of our atmosphere for the sake of profits and political contributions.
