Think about speech

I read that Dinesh D'Souza spoke at Bucknell University. I have never been a fan of his, however his recent books and movie have reached a new low and reflects more on how far this man has fallen rather than reflecting any actual criticisms of the president. There are a good number or progressives and liberals who can articulate specific things about Mr. Obama's presidency that are not to our liking - however that is not what this is all about. This is lurid speculation at the scandal-mongering level. Of course, the article concerning Mr. D'Souza's appearance emphasized the importance of free speech and differing views and there is no one more than me that values free speech.

However this whole free speech issue has been distorted — there are specific types of speech that are not protected and never should be protected - defamation, libel, lies and threats are not protected speech.

There is also another issue here. A group of students known as the White Student Union at Towson University has invited white nationalist Jared Taylor to speak there. Keep in mind that places like Towson University want to maintain a certain level of scholarship. So in the name of so-called "free speech" they are obligated to bring in people who have no credibility or even valid credentials to support a certain view.

We are not talking about this man being barred from a variety of venues and media appearances. What we are talking about is giving a voice to someone who does not reach the standards of scholarship that a given university or organization may have. This silly idea that all views be given voice is nonsensical. There are some views that aren't worth examining on any serious level. I think there has been so much distortion of things by certain parts of the media that we have gotten to the point that people think that anything can be said and should be given a platform. People need to do a bit more thinking on this one for sure.
