---- — I read Robert Beck's letter ("Morally Straight") with sadness. I am a former Boy Scout, the father of a former Cub Scout, a lifelong Christian, and a person who supports inclusion of all boys in the Boy Scouts. Beck's lumping together of pornographers, adulterers and fornicators with persons who are homosexual is an affront to all people who have been made to feel marginalized by selective use of scripture. His views are also based on the worst of stereotypes concerning gay and lesbian people, perpetrated, sadly, by many folks who identify themselves as Christian.
There is no correlation between one's being homosexual and one being a sexual predator. Since the word "homosexuality" occurs nowhere in scripture, he makes an exegetical leap, assuming that the words of the Apostle Paul, who was condemning physical acts that to him were abominations, are proscriptive for all people. Paul did not address same-sex loving relationships, nor did he address homosexual orientation. In his time and place, he had no social framework with which to address it outside of the common practices of prostitution and pederasty. And pederasty was committed by married men!
It's interesting that no one ever quotes Jesus on the subject, because there are no easy proof-texts there. Jesus does address the sin of Sodom, and it's not what many people think it is. Look it up!
So, if Beck insists on deploring homosexual persons, which is his right, though not charitable, he should do so admitting that the views are his, not God's.
