I enjoy reading The Daily Item to stay updated on what is going on in my community and other areas. I am writing this letter to respectfully voice my opinion on what is being written about Midd-West High School.
A concern I have is that our school may be given a bad image because of the negative headlines that make the front page of The Daily Item. No school is perfect. I accept that we have defects and would like for us to move forward in addressing these defects so they no longer cripple us.
Midd-West has a lot of good that does not make the front page. We had two wrestlers that made it to the PIAA championship tournament. We have a number of students who passed their Keystone tests with high scores. We recently had a Hall of Fame NFL football player, Andy Russell of the Pittsburgh Steelers, visit our school for a motivational speech. One yearly progress has risen steadily since 2010 and is starting a new pattern, reflecting the acceleration of our learning. Midd-West has had great success when it comes to soccer and lacrosse, in addition to many musical and theatrical honors. These achievements are subjects that could have made the front page.
I am simply asking that Midd-West High School be recognized positively. As an African-American transfer student from Williamsport, the transition in my senior year was not the easiest thing to do. The Midd-West community has made it as comfortable as possible. I have bounced around in several schools, but this is the most welcoming school I have attended. This is a school district that genuinely cares about its students. Unfortunately, this is not the image portrayed in the newspaper. The Midd-West community works together to do great things and we would appreciate your recognition of our many successes.
