Thank you, Pat Bruno, for your authoritative 'My Turn' of May 1, concerning the relation of gun violence to children. You will, of course, be vilified by those for whom facts are irrelevant. Seven children killed every day with guns? A piffle. Twice that who die from cancer? Stop being emotional! The equivalent of 128 Newtown shootings? Who can count that high?
Pat destroyed the "gun-training" myth. Suicide being the third-leading cause of death in teens, guns used most commonly, is not a negligible statistic. The totally irrational appeal by the leadership of the NRA to the fictional protection of the 2nd Amendment -- an appeal not supported by a substantial majority of NRA members -- would be pathetic if not so deadly.
How many more Newtowns will it take to enable the modest measures proposed, then defeated, by Congress to be implemented? A government held in thrall by a gun club is a travesty.
