Applaud Sen. Toomey's work

Daily Item

---- — House Bill 357 "declares that any new federal limitations on guns to be unenforceable in Pennsylvania." This bill was proposed by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe and according to The Daily Item is co-sponsored by three of our local legislators.

Would these people also approve of Pennsylvania seceding from the Union?

Do they want a society where anybody can buy a gun as easily as a set of dishes?

The pro-gun advocates fault Senator Toomey and his colleague Joe Manchin for their compromise background check legislation, which was less comprehensive than President Obama wanted and was expected to pass -- it missed by four votes. This compromise would have prohibited a national gun registry and eased restrictions on gun transfers to family members. It would extend background checks on potential gun buyers to sales at gun shows and from the Internet. This legislation seemed sensible enough to me.

Law-abiding citizens have nothing to fear from background checks. And what is this I hear that the government wants to take guns away from law-abiding citizens? Where is this fear coming from?

The most familiar objection I hear is that restrictions on gun sales will do no good -- criminals will get them anyway, or kill by other means. In other words, let's not even try.

We need to use our brains, not our fears, to create a safer society. We need to support and encourage those lawmakers who are working toward this goal, not those who would exploit our fears and frustrations.

As a Democrat, I often disagree with Senator Toomey. As an American, I applaud his bipartisan and statesmanlike work in crafting a sensible gun control amendment. He may have lost some support from pro-gun people, but I believe he's gained more than he's lost. He's definitely gained mine.
