The writer of a letter to the editor in your March 6 issue stated that there is “... this abomination that is taking place in America.” Though he also complained about the financial policies of President Obama’s administration, it is clear that the “abomination” he refers to is that President and First Lady Obama have joined with a majority of people in the U.S., including the U.S. Supreme Court, who now support equal rights for people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender.
The only abomination I see is that there are so called “American Christians” who are so closed minded, narrow, and bigoted that they condemn anyone who is different than they are.
I was taught that the whole point of Christianity was to love one another not to condemn the “other.”
Equal rights are guaranteed by our constitution, which is a legal document, not a religious one. I am pleased to be a citizen of a country which guarantees equal rights for all regardless of their sexual orientation, just as it guarantees equal rights for everyone regardless of their religious beliefs. I do not want to be a citizen of a country ruled by religious leaders with laws based on religious beliefs. There are many examples of that type of nation (theocracies) in history and in our current world. I shudder to recall the horrors committed by such nations in the name of God.
