Traffic concerns

The Daily Item

— I read where the Lewisburg School Board is going to pay to have an expert identify the “most pertinent intersections” for the new school. Save that money because I will identify them for you for nothing.

The two intersections where nightmarish traffic problems will occur will be Newman Road at William Penn Drive and Newman Road at Hospital Drive.

In fact, the entire length of Newman Road will rival Interstate 80 at construction time. The intersection of Newman and William Penn is already a problem, especially trying to make a left turn from Newman onto William Penn. A telephone pole and sign make it impossible to see to the left so you have to edge your vehicle out partially into the intersection.

Just when you think it is safe to turn, out from a hidden curve to the right comes what seems to be the start of the Indy 500. Cars come at a high rate of speed from the direction of the prison. A few want to turn left onto Newman but you have to guess because seldom is a turn signal used. Now, picture this with many more cars and school busses wanting to do the same left turn once the new school is operating.

The situation at Newman and Hospital Drive will also be a mess. That intersection is not a normal four-way intersection. Newman cuts backward making a left turn from Hospital Drive onto Newman, already a challenge. Well, the only consolation is that there is a hospital nearby to take care of the accidents.

There is also an animal hospital there to pick up the overflow at Evangelical Community Hospital if you don’t mind a shorter operating table.

There seems to be no solution to this potential traffic snarl. A fairly quiet area will soon become a hub of activity not necessarily for the better.
