Student Voice: Our responsibility

The Daily Item

— Recently, in Philadelphia, a 2-year-old boy killed his 11-year-old sister with a gun. The mother’s boyfriend put it on top of the refrigerator, but it ended up on the bedroom night stand. No one knows how it got there.

The bullet had entered the girl’s shoulder and traveled to her chest. She was rushed to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, but died a half-hour later.

I believe that it was a huge mistake to bring a loaded gun into the house. A gun that is loaded and left where children can get it is highly dangerous. A 2-year-old child is very curious and will grab anything in sight. Parents need to be responsible for the safety of their children. This was a careless and unnecessary death.

People need to take extra care when they have guns in the home. Guns should never be left unattended. Guns should never be left loaded around little kids. Anyone that has a gun should keep it locked safe or somewhere else where little kids aren’t around. Anyone who purchases a gun or firearm should be required to have some type of training or education on how to use it responsible.

The death of this young girl could have been prevented. As adults we have the responsibility to keep our children safe. We must do everything in our power to make sure something like this never happens again.
