Mazeppa's Manna

Daily Item

---- — I want to give thanks to The Daily Item for its wonderful editorial titled "Dreams need to Stay Within reach." As it pointed out in the article, the AP reports that four out of five U.S adults struggle with joblessness, near poverty, or reliance on public assistance. If many current trends continue, close to 85 percent of all working age adults in the United States will experience economic insecurity by 2013.

This is why Mazeppa Union Church and St. Johns Church of Dry Valley are responding to the crisis by opening up "Mazeppa's Manna" which will be a food and clothing distribution center helping those in Union County. While the main goal of our churches is to spread the gospel, we will diligently work with our great local businesses, social service agencies, and elected leaders to help to get people jobs and to help them in their needs. We have some of the greatest business leaders and elected leaders in the country.

If we all work together, we can get people back to work empowering them to become leaders of this nation.

We will open at 10 a.m. on Aug. 14 at the former United Methodist church in Mazeppa where Rep. Fred Keller and I will cut the ribbon. We will give out 50 backpacks to children on that day filled with school supplies. Please come out and check out this new response to our current problems.

The Rev. Ricky Phillips,

Mazeppa Union Church
