Shikellamy Middle School plans

— You don’t really know a neighborhood unless you live there. I live near the site of the new Shikellamy Middle School in Northumberland. The plan the school board has selected puts all buses and student drop-off traffic, all delivery traffic, and all after-hour visitors to the gym out onto Fifth Street.

This is directly across from the bakery which involves the 18-wheel tractor trailer trucks arriving and leaving, flour delivery trucks daily, and employees parking on both sides of the street. In other words, a typical industrial situation.

Walking students will surely take a short cut up Fifth Street in this mess instead of hiking half way up Hanover Street to cut up to the school entrance.

The architects have an entire city block to work with in planning this $17 million middle school. Why would they choose a plan that clearly is a tragedy waiting to happen?

At a school board meeting on Thursday this plan will be presented for approval. Talk to a Shikellamy school board member and ask them if this is really the best plan for the generations of students who will use this new school?

Come and visit my neighborhood and you will understand the problem.
