We just finished watching the wonderfully produced documentary "For The Kids: A Thon Story."
The film vividly captures the gamut of emotions felt by families touched by childhood cancers and the hope and help given to them as a result of Penn State students' efforts to fund the Four Diamonds Fund through a yearlong effort culminating in THON. These students clearly represent Penn State's finest and the $10.6 million raised this year is amazing. I highly recommend the film to everyone.
It must be noted that there was a glaring omission in the film. During the very dark days of November 2011, I and thousands of other alumni settled on the idea that pushing THON over the $10 million mark would be a fitting way for us to show our firm commitment to the university. For most of us, our resolve to support THON this year is inextricably linked to the opportunity to honor one Joseph Vincent Paterno with our gift.
By not acknowledging this fact the producers of the film do all a disservice. No amount of political correctness and deference to the desire to move forward can extricate Joe Paterno from the lives of the faithful. A popular T-shirt says it all, "We Are because He Was."
