Political correctness

After reading several times the recent letter by Mr. Prentiss, I must confess that I was really unable to determine the exact intent.

I was prepared to move on when the words “political correctness” and “winners and losers” again caught my attention and I could not let that go.

When Mr. Prentiss reduces political correctness to winners and losers, here is what he is implying about individual people: Jews and Muslims are losers, Christians are winners; gays are losers, straights are winners; the physically handicapped are losers, the strong and tall are winners; little people are losers, full-size people are winners; women are losers, men are winners; the mentally ill are losers, the healthy-minded are winners; non-whites are losers, white people are winners; the academically challenged are losers, Mensas are winners.

In Mr. Prentiss’ sad world, nothing is done to ameliorate these differences and use of personally, hurtful words. Sure, political correctness for political correctness’ sake is not necessarily laudable, but political correctness in responding to the individual situations of people we know or have contact with should certainly be a worthy goal for us all.

You might have the Democratic registration, Mr. Prentiss, but you apparently do not have the spirit.
