MILTON — A series of four one-hour classes conducted by two certified instructors is planned as part of the nationwide “Pilates for Pink” fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

For a $10 donation, participants can try a session of Pilates at Heartline Health and Fitness, Route 405 just north of Route 45. Pilates is a conditioning program developed by Joseph Pilates.

Roni Latshaw, of Northumberland, and Jody Yost, of New Columbia, both of whom teach the classes, are excited about the program.

“Pilates is a mind and body workout somewhat like yoga,” said Latshaw. “It works on the core muscles.”

“It works on your posture and breathing, but it’s not stretching like aerobics,” said Yost. “The aim is to give you more flexibility.”

The classes, each one hour long, will be given from 9 to 10 a.m. Oct. 11; from 6 to 7 a.m. Oct. 13; from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 and from 9 to 10 a.m. Oct. 15. Call 524-5200 to register and bring a $10 donation to the class of your choice.

Pilates for Pink is a national effort to raise funds for breast cancer research. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation has raised more than $195 million for clinical research into therapies and genetic links that may lead to prevention and a cure for the devastating illness.

“One out of eight women gets breast cancer in her life,” said Latshaw. “That’s a staggering statistic. Everyone knows someone who has the disease.”

Pilates can even be a type of therapy for women recovering from breast cancer, said Yost.
