‘We heal with zeal’

Danville senior Brian Bastian may be missing his calling. When he quipped about tidbits from the life of Geisinger CEO and President Dr. Glenn Steele Jr. at a Distinguished Citizen Award dinner recently, Steele took it all in stride.

“Brian will be going to Penn State next year to major in meteorology. That may be an incredible waste. He can be a CEO anytime,” Steele said.

An Eagle Scout, Brian served as master of ceremonies for the well-attended event. After humorously changing some of the dinner sponsors’ logos, Brian suggested Geisinger begin the ad campaign, “We Heal with Zeal due to Doc Steele.”

Besides Dr. Bruce Hamory, executive vice president and chief medical officer for Geisinger, who served as keynote speaker, others attending were state Sen. John Gordner, state Rep. Dave Millard, Judge Thomas James and hospital officials.

The Danville Ambulance Service is continuing its building fund drive. The ambulance service has outgrown its station on A Street, which it has occupied since 1977. In 2007, the service purchased the former Gold Star Nursing Home, which needs major renovations, as well as a six-door garage to house vehicles and equipment. The estimated cost is $600,000 with $181,000 raised so far.

Contributions may be sent to the service at 303 Schoolhouse Road, Danville. Heading the squad’s board of directors are Karl Beagle, Joshua Hawkins, Judi West, Jack Reilly, Marvin Shrawder and Scott Davis.

With the annual yard sale of the Danville SPCA coming up fast, items are being sought from the public for the sale. They may be taken to the shelter during regular hours, which are 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays.

All proceeds go toward providing food and housing for the thousands of homeless animals received every year at the shelter. The yard sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 21 at the shelter, Bloom Road.
