SELINSGROVE -- Despite the humidity and temperature, there was no meltdown this time around for the Selinsgrove Major Division All-Stars.
With pitcher Colin Rice cool as a cucumber on the mound, and a defense playing solidly behind him, Selinsgrove played its most dominant game of the tournament so far.
Rice threw a four-hit gem and didn't allow a Mifflinburg baserunner past second base as Selinsgrove took a 5-0 victory in the District 13 Area II Major Division elimination bracket final Sunday at Rotary Field.
"I was nervous, especially when your kid is on the mound," said Colin's father, and Selinsgrove manager, Dean Rice. "It was just a good all-around game for us. We just didn't let Mifflinburg score, and we didn't let them come back. We pitched well and our defense was strong, and it showed."
Selinsgrove will now play Milton for the Area II championship. Game one is today at 5:30 p.m. Selinsgrove needs to beat Milton twice to claim the title. Game 2, if necessary, is Tuesday at 5:30.
After witnessing his players' impromptu pow-wow before the game, the elder Rice believes his team is ready, both physically and mentally, to play Milton today.
"The players were out in the field earlier (before the game), just sitting together and talking," said manager Rice. "They don't do that a whole lot, so I think they are ready to go now."
Selinsgrove looked ready for Milton on Sunday as it took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI single by Aaron Shaffer. The hard liner to right produced the only run Colin Rice would need.
Rice needed just 76 pitches to get his gem. He had six strikeouts and issued two walks. There were only seven baserunners in the game for Mifflinburg.
"Colin was just so relaxed on the mound, and he threw pitches because he knew the defense was behind him," said manager Rice. "Mifflinburg hit the ball a couple of times, but we had great plays by Isaiah (Rapp) at second and Tyler (Cook) at short."
Rice gave himself some extra run support in the third as he and Andy Ryan hit back-to-back RBI singles to push Selinsgrove's lead to 3-0.
Matt Apple, pinch-hitting for Ryan, capped Selinsgrove's win by driving the first pitch he saw over the left-center field fence for a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Colton Brouse scored on Apple's homer after he had singled to lead off the inning.
"Matt comes up and does his job. That's his second long ball of the tournament," manager Rice said. "For a little guy he has a little pop in his bat. He's a good little ballplayer."
Brouse finished 2-for-3 for Selinsgrove. Devin Hendrix went 2-for-3 for Mifflinburg.
"We were flat, we couldn't buy a hit and the kids got down on themselves," said Mifflinburg manager Keith Aurand. "I think the game against Milton (an 8-7 loss Sunday) took a lot out of them. What are you going to do? Somebody wins and somebody loses."
