High school roundup: Danville falls to 0-2 with loss to Hughesville

By The Daily Item

DANVILLE -- The schedule-makers did the Danville High School tennis team few favors entering the first season of the Heartland Athletic Conference.

After the Ironmen were blanked in their opener at Montoursville on Monday, the Ironmen returned home Wednesday, where they were met by another old Susquehanna Valley League power, Hughesville.

The Spartans won two of three singles matches and swept the doubles to stay unbeaten in the early going with a 4-1 victory at Danville Middle School.

The Ironmen are now 0-2.

Danville won just two games combined in doubles, but got a point from Rosie McKinley at No. 2 singles.

"I told the girls after the match not to get too far down," said first-year Danville coach Mary Jo Baum. "These are two of the top teams in the league and they play like it. They were both very good."

Megan Gardner and Kim Rogers picked up straight-set wins in singles for the Spartans, while McKinley outlasted Maja Ostijic 7-5 in the opening set before cruising to a 6-2 win in the second.

Milton 4, Selinsgrove 1

SELINSGROVE -- The Black Panthers picked up four straight-set wins to topple Selinsgrove in a Heartland-I match.

Sarah Hess and Kathy Jacobs picked up singles wins for Milton. Alicia Bennage and Seranda LeyMarie fought through a tough first set before rolling in the second. The No. 2 doubles team of Chloe Roberto and Danielle Brewer won 6-3, 6-3.

Ashley Martin picked up a straight-set win at No. 1 singles to earn the only point for Selinsgrove (0-2).

Montoursville 5, Shikellamy 0

MONTOURSVILLE -- The Braves won four games in doubles after getting shut out in singles in a Heartland-I contest.

At No. 2 doubles, Shikellamy's tandem of Heather Buckholtz and Kyna Moyer fell, 6-2, 6-1.

Shikellamy is now 0-2, while the Warriors are 2-0.
