DANVILLE -- Speed kills, and Midd-West's Cheyenne Spade proved that statement to be true as she broke free twice to score two goals en route to a 3-0 win to spoil Danville's home opener. The win moves the Mustangs' record to 2-0 (2-0 Heartland Athletic Conference Division I), while Danville falls to 0-1 (0-1).
"One of the problems with soccer is you can't stop the game to talk to your team," said Danville Coach Duane Davis. "Our team has to be able to keep their composure and not allow the next goal. It's something we will have to work on as the season continues."
Spade wasted no time displaying her speed and skill as she drove a rebound off the goalie for the first goal of the game. The score came only four minutes into the contest.
"She (Spade) is an extremely talented player," said Midd-West coach Gary Keister. "She has great control over herself and can really turn on the burners to get separation."
As panic began to set in early for the Ironmen, they started to force passes down the middle and take long shots on goal.
"We seemed to suffer from the first-game jitters," said Davis. "The first defensive mistake that let up the goal took the girls out of the game. I tried to tell them that they had to rebound and continue to play their game. We just started to panic."
Ten minutes after her first goal, Spade capitalized again as she was able to dribble her way past the defense for another unassisted goal.
"Spade has a lot of speed and knows how to find holes in the defense," said Davis. "Soccer is a game you want to play ahead. When you go down early you tend to go away from what you are doing. Our team started to fall into the long ball trap, trying to kick the ball down the middle and open the field up that way."
Danville began to settle down at the end of the half by getting two corner kick opportunities and two shots on goal. On the first corner, Danville got the ball into the middle of the field only to have it knocked out of bounds by a Mustang defender. The second was one of Danville's best looks all game as the Midd-West goalie made an attempt to block a shot that led to a rebound opportunity. But a Danville player booted the ball over the goal.
"Our defense started to panic at the end of the half," said Keister. "The corner kicks were tough for us to defend."
Danville ended the first down 0-2, but not for lack of effort as the Ironmen got nine shots on goal and two corner kicks.
"We had chances at the goal," said Davis. "Unfortunately ... the girls rushed shots on ope looks. I believe that will start to change as the girls get more experience."
Midd-West midfielder Taylor Folk finally put the game out of reach midway through the second with a goal off of a Brittany Kuhns assist. Kuhns connected for a textbook pass that got behind the defense, allowing Folk to beat the goalie for the easy score.
"We talked at halftime about making a couple of adjustments," said Keister. "We wanted to move some players around to see how it would work out. What we really wanted to do is get some pressure off our goalkeeper and get more shots."
Danville controlled the middle of the field most of the game and did a good job of finding open girls to get the ball to. Midd-West just proved to be faster, making it hard for Danville to defend.
