DANVILLE -- It was senior night for the Danville girls soccer team Tuesday, and they couldn't have celebrated in a better fashion.
The Ironmen seniors enjoyed an offensive outburst in a 4-0 win over Williamsport in a non-conference game Tuesday.
"I was really happy with the offense," Danville coach Duane Davis said. "We attacked the entire game and stayed aggressive."
Senior Laura Cook couldn't have asked for a better night as she scored her first goal after moving in from the defense to give one of the mid-fielders a chance to catch her breath. The move worked perfectly for Cook who booted a ball in from the top of the penalty box and over the keeper's head for the unassisted goal. The goal marked the first of Cook's career as a varsity player for Danville. The goal was the last of four scored by the Ironmen and it all but iced the game for them.
"Laura is one of the best defenders in the entire league," said Davis. "It was nice to see her get that, she has been a contributor for the past four years and this couldn't have been any better for her."
Danville's offense was on the attack the entire game and its defense shut Williamsport down limiting it to only two shots on the night. Williamsport was also held without a corner kick until late in the second half of the competition.
The Ironmen offense forced 12 shots and got 6 corners all in the first half. The first points of the competition came with 8:07 left in the first half when Ashley Craig fed a pass into the center of the field for Kelsey Smith who booted it to the right side of the net for her first of two goals.
"It always helps to get on the board first," said Davis. "We really did a good job of getting after them early."
Smith's second goal of the night came at the 15:54 mark when Korrin Hackenberg connected on a pass that froze the defense and gave Smith an open look on goal. The goal put the Ironmen up by three with less than 16 minutes left in the match.
Autumn Brouse got the second goal of the game with an unassisted shot to the right side of the goal after stealing the ball from the keeper. The goal established Danville's offensive attack and forced Williamsport to fall back and try to limit shots.
"We did a good job defensively," said Davis. "There was a short time halfway through the third when we started to get tired and Williamsport got some shots."
The seniors will have a positive memory when they look back on their night. Unfortunately all can't be said for students attending the game. At the 17:56 mark in the competition play was stopped and the official on the visitor's side requested that Danville officials ask the student section to leave the game. The official indicated that the students were using foul language and referring to the visitors in a derogatory way. Play resumed after 5 minutes when a Danville official came over an asked the students to leave.
