SELINSGROVE -- Being a defensive lineman in Selinsgrove's 3-5 defense is an unheralded pursuit.
Fans see the four touchdowns that quarterback Cory Briggs threw or the three touchdowns catches and three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, by Ryan Keiser, but the Seals themselves know what the key to Friday night's homecoming win over undefeated Southern Columbia was.
"All I saw was the defensive line blowing up every play and the linebackers running downhill," Keiser observed from his safety position.
The Tigers came into the contest averaging more than 300 yards and 38 points per game, but Selinsgrove limited Southern to one third-quarter touchdown and just 105 yards on the ground in a commanding 47-7 victory at Harold Bolig Memorial Field Friday night.
"We set a goal on Monday for our defensive linemen to be in their backfield on every play," Selinsgrove (6-1) coach Dave Hess said. "We wanted them to try and disrupt every play. I have to give a lot of credit to Brandon Aungst, Jon Trego and Spencer Myers."
The Selinsgrove defense limited Southern (6-1) to just 17 yards on the ground in the first half until Southern fullback Steve Roth broke a 21-yard run with 30 seconds left in the second quarter.
"They run the Wing-T so well, you know you have to shut down their running game," Selinsgrove linebacker Josh Moore said. "They like to run the blast (with the fullback), then go with counters and mis-direction. Everybody has to stay home and fill their gaps."
That forced the Tigers to the air where the Seals picked off six passes, three by Keiser and one each by Justin Kline, Aungst and Ben Morrow. Selinsgrove jumped on Southern early, scoring two touchdowns in the first 2:34 of the game. It started when sophomore Kyle Reinard returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.
"It was a new return that we put in this week," Reinard said. "There was a big hole in the middle and I just had to beat the kicker."
"The credit has to go to coach Bob Muolo, who put that return in this week. He really lives and breaths Selinsgrove football," Hess said. "That return gave us momentum and we never gave it back."
The Seals' defense forced a three-and-out and the offense took over on its own 27 after the punt. Two passes to Keiser, a slant he turned into a 37-yard gain and then a 36-yard fade pattern for the score and Selinsgrove had a 13-0 advantage less than three minutes into the game.
Selinsgrove made it 20-0 with 4:06 left in the second quarter when Briggs hit Keiser in stride behind the Tigers' secondary for a 28-yard scoring strike. That play capped an eight-play, 51-yard drive.
Keiser made it 27-0 when he picked off a pass and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown with 38 seconds left in the first half. He picked it off on the right side of the field and cut all way across field where he picked up the blocks he needed to score.
The Seals put the mercy rule in effect when Aungst read a screen perfectly on a third-and-five play, dropped into a zone and made the interception. He rambled 36 yards down to the Southern 5. Two plays later, Briggs hit Kyle Schuck with a five-yard scoring strike and Teighler Doak with the two-point conversion pass for a 35-0 lead.
The Tigers finally got going on offense with an eight-play 80-yard march, capped by a Steve Roth 2-yard TD run with 6:19 left in the third quarter. The big play was Roth's 54-yard run to the Selinsgrove 5. The Seals answered with one more big play, this time a 76-yard scoring strike from Briggs to Keiser. The junior wide out finished with six catches for 188 yards and three scores. Keiser now has 11 touchdown catches this season.
