MOUNT CARMEL -- For a time Friday, it looked like Mount Carmel was trying to score a point for every year that the Silver Bowl has been in existence. In the end, the Red Tornadoes decided to celebrate their famed domicile's 75th birthday by merely putting 61 on the scoreboard.
Justin Pellowski had 227 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns, Marcus Wasilewski threw for 192 yards, and the Red Tornadoes first-team defense held Jersey Shore to a field goal in a 61-10 victory in Heartland Athletic Conference crossover action.
"We feel good," Mount Carmel coach Mike Brennan said. "It's almost scary good. Things are going too well."
With the win, the Red Tornadoes (7-0) set up a showdown between two unbeatens next week, as Lewisburg will visit the Silver Bowl in another HAC crossover game. The week after that, Mount Carmel, ranked seventh in the state among Class AA schools, will face Southern Columbia in a match-up that will probably determine the HAC-II champion.
"We have a very good Lewisburg team coming in here next week," Brennan said. "We're going to have to be at the top of our game."
The Red Tornadoes scored on five plays that went for at least 47 yards -- four in the first half. Two of them came on 47- and 80-yard TD passes from Wasilewski to Matt Koveleski and Pellowski, respectively. Julius Demetrius had a 78-yard touchdown run, Pellowski had a 98-yard kickoff return to start the second half, and Meyrick Lamb took a punt back 73 yards to start the scoring.
"It always feels good to be able to do that," Wasilewski said about the two touchdown passes. "Guys make plays, the line does what they have to do, and everything just comes together."
It was 20-0 after the first period and 41-3 at halftime. Pellowski made it 48-3 just 14 seconds into the third period.
Jersey Shore (2-5) got on the board in the second quarter thanks to a 20-yard field goal from Eli Skinner. The Bulldogs scored their lone touchdown on the game's last play, as offensive lineman Aaron Reidell picked up Ryan Shay's fumble and rumbled 87 yards for the score.
The Red Tornadoes held the Bulldogs to just 15 yards rushing on 24 attempts. Jersey Shore quarterback Taylor English completed 8-of-24 passes and was picked off twice.
"You have to be able to get turnovers ... for this to happen," Brennan said. "And it's happened all year."
The Silver Bowl opened in 1932, but school officials never got around to celebrating the stadium's 75th anniversary last year. Friday night's game featured a parade in addition to the homecoming festivities. The marching band played "Happy Birthday" before kickoff.
Almost as soon as the game started, it was over. Jersey Shore went three-and-out on its first possession, and then Skinner sent a booming punt back to the Mount Carmel 29, where Matt Moroz fielded it before handing off to Lamb on a reverse.
Lamb, a freshman, followed his blockers down the right sideline and scored with 10:52 to go in the first.
"Sometimes (having so many skill-position players) presents problems, because we only have one football," Brennan said. "But it's a good problem to have."
