Selinsgrove, Mifflinburg play to scoreless draw
Seals clinch playoff berth with tie against Wildcats

MIFFLINBURG -- If only Dustin Folio could somehow defy the laws of physics and put a header on his own throw-ins, maybe Selinsgrove would have escaped with a win Monday.

As it was, Folio's throw-in in the 100th and final minute went off the head of teammate Jake Newman and out of bounds, leading to a Mifflinburg goal kick. The Heartland Athletic Conference Division I game then ended in a scoreless draw after 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.

"We're pleased that we were able to come back from the way we played on Saturday (in a 3-2 loss to Millville)," said Seals coach Chris Lupolt, whose side clinched a playoff berth with the tie. "That was kind of ugly. ... It's a relief that we're finally qualified, and now we can prepare (for the postseason)."

Mifflinburg (10-5-2, 8-5-2 HAC-I) was ready for Folio's long throw-ins this time. In the teams' first meeting, Selinsgrove (7-5-4, 6-4-4) got two goals off Folio throw-ins en route to a 4-0 victory.

"We worked on defending that stuff," Wildcats coach Dan Gehers said. "We did a lot better (Monday). We weren't really in trouble too much on any of (Selinsgrove's throw-ins)."

Seals keeper Matt Salsman made seven saves and Wildcats goalie Noah Roseth -- who's only been in goal for the second half of the season -- made six stops. Roseth's best save stopped a Folio header in the 94th minute. Gannon Keller made a perfect cross from the right flank, and the 6-foot-4 Folio drilled it, but Roseth was right where he had to be.

Folio had a number of good scoring opportunities, as he also headed a corner kick right to Roseth in the 86th minute and sent another header wide left in the 54th.

"We certainly had our opportunities," Lupolt said. "Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don't."

The Wildcats outshot the Seals 17-13; both teams had seven shots on goal. Mifflinburg had a good scoring chance in the sixth minute, as Michael Wagner ran down a long kick from Roseth and then crossed it on the ground to Bob Magyar at the 12; Magyar's point-blank shot was stopped by Salsman.

"We had quite a few crosses," Gehers said. "We had a few chances on them."

Mifflinburg almost ended it in regulation when Kory Swartzlander dribbled into the box and sent a short pass over to Wagner in the 76th minute; Wagner's chip shot went over the crossbar.

Notes: Mifflinburg had already clinched a playoff berth. It will be the Wildcats' first appearance in the playoffs since 1998. ... Selinsgrove had a slight edge in corners, 9-8. ... Play was fairly clean: The first foul wasn't whistled until the 36th minute. There were only six fouls called all afternoon.
