High school soccer: Midd-West leads first HAC all-star team selections

After winning both its division and district titles this season, Midd-West had three of its players selected to the Heartland Athletic Conference Division I All-Star team, as voted upon by the conference's head coaches.

In addition, Chris Sauer was named the Division I's Coach of the Year for the Mustangs, who after winning the District 4 Class AA title advanced to the PIAA semifinals earlier this week.

Named to the Division I first team for Midd-West were junior forward Alex Callender and senior midfielders Ty Knepp and Colby Gehers.

Rounding out the Division I first-team selections were senior forward Nick Ferguson and senior midfielder Mike Grasso from Milton, senior forward Jimmy Peeler and senior goalkeeper Matt Salsman from Selinsgrove, plus Mifflinburg junior forward Wes Doebler, Lewisburg senior midfielder Eric Barrett, Shikellamy senior defender Kyle Raynes and Williamsport senior midfielder Patrick Smith and senior defender Manny Baez.

In Division II, Warrior Run had senior midfielder Levi Malischewski, junior defender Chris Bower and senior goalkeeper David Marr named to the first team.

Loyalsock, the Division II champion, had five first-team selections.

Named to the team for the Lancers were forwards Jon Havens and Chris Liefeld, midfielders Dave Covert and Brennan Pysher and defender Chris Wyshock.

Rounding out the Division II first team were Bloomsburg forward Jared Shannon, midfielder Lars Bogar and defender Eric Cook; Hughesville defender Bruce Waugh and Shamokin junior forward Chase Gallie.

Loyalsock's Matt Canich was named the Division II's Coach of the Year by leading the Lancers to the division title.

In Division III, Southern Columbia led the way with four first-team selections.

Voted to the first team for the Tigers were junior forward Evan Day, sophomore midfielder Dante Anskis, junior defender B.J. Snyder and junior goalkeeper Kurt Kessler.

The rest of the members of the Division II first team were forward Nate Birth and midfielder Matt Delong from Millville; forward Logan Yerger and defender Zach Yoas from South Williamsport; forward Jason Stoner and defender Nic Wilkins from Sullivan County; midfielder Zane Kelsey and defender Tom Dougher from Benton and Muncy midfielder Noah Sterngold.

Division III Coach of the Year honors went to Benton's Ron Kelsey, who led the Tigers to the division title.
