Danville's Haney nominated for Mr. PA Football

DANVILLE — A record-setting Danville linebacker needs votes from local fans, coaches and media to be named 2013’s “Mr. PA Football.”

Senior Eric Haney found out over the Christmas break that he was nominated to the Mr. PA Football “Tremendous Twenty” list.

“It’s pretty exciting and a good surprise,” Haney said.

High school athletes are selected by fans, media and coaches for the Mr. PA Football award, which is sponsored by the website Two awards will be presented, one for the best player from smaller Class A and AA high school football teams and one for larger Class AAA and AAAA high school football teams. Danville is in Class AA for football.

Voters have until Jan. 4 to cast votes for the Tremendous Twenty. On Jan. 5, the 10 highest scoring student athletes will move on to the next round. Near the end of the month, a final five students will be selected, from which one will be named Mr. PA Football and be treated to an award banquet in February. Voting can be done at

Votes from fans, the media and coaches will each count as one-third of a nominee’s total votes.

“Just being in the Tremendous Twenty is pretty exciting,” Haney said. He expects stiff competition from some of the other players on the list, such as South Williamsport running back and linebacker Dom Bragalone and Dunmore running back Daiqwon Buckley. “If I make the top ten, I’ll be satisfied,” Haney said.

Haney has set Danville High School’s record for career tackles, at 442, and single season tackles, at 159. He has also been named to the Pennsylvania All-State team after each of the last two seasons.

“It’s an awesome achievement for him,” said Danville football coach Jim Keiser. “He’s a great kid and very deserving of the honor.”

Haney was also named the Defensive Player of the Year by The Daily Item.
