H.S. football: Shamokin names new head coach

COAL TOWNSHIP — After Yaacov Yisrael’s resignation from the Shamokin football team, the Shamokin School Board approved Pat DiRienzo as the new varsity football coach on Thursday evening.

The school board gave DiRienzo a one-year contract with a $3,600 salary.

DiRienzo is no stranger to Shamokin. He has been involved with the program for 17 years and was an assistant last year under Yisreal. He also coached at the local youth level.

Other coaches who were considered include Shamokin assistants Ed Bailey and Ted Pietkiewicz, Pottsville junior high coach Zane Simpson and former North Schuylkill coach Rick Geist.

The Indians went a disappointing 0-10 last season. Shamokin went 2-8 in 2012 and appeared in the District 4 Class AAA semifinals.
