SHIPPENSBURG — SELINSGROVE - Selinsgrove sophomore Courtney McCartney didn’t join most of the athletes at the PIAA Track and Field meet at Shippensburg University on Thursday night.
McCartney opted to sleep in her own bed and limit distractions from staying in the dormitories with the other athletes.
“The atmosphere can be a little crazy down here, so I just wanted to mellow out at home,” McCartney said.
That proved to be the perfect strategy as McCartney claimed the gold medal Friday morning in the Class AAA shot put in the dreary weather.
McCartney’s winning throw of 45-5 ½ came on her fifth throw, but the she led from his first throw of the day.
“I just wanted to come in and throw my best. I was hoping for a PR and seeing where it got me,” McCartney said. “I was pretty consistent all morning – throwing 44 or 45.”
McCartney did set a PR with her throw, besting her 45-3 throw when she finished second earlier this year at the Penn Relays.
