Bob Garrett's Talking Points: Hunting and hiking on the schedule

"You will find turkey hunting to be endlessly fascinating, occasionally easy, regularly difficult and frequently impossible, but never dull."

Starting on Monday, Pennsylvania turkey hunters will be permitted to hunt from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. These expanded hunting hours will continue through the last day of the season, which is Friday, May 31.

This is the third year for all-day hunting during the second half of the spring season. The idea is to provide hunters with more time in the field, or more correctly, in the blind. According to Mary Jo Casalena, the Pennsylvania Game Commission's wild turkey biologist, "By the second half of the season, hunter participation decreases significantly and nesting hens are less prone to abandon nests."

She added that "All-day hunting during this portion of the season has had minimal impact to nesting."

Touch the future

Heard from Jon Brennen who is the Boy Scouts top guy in our area that there are still some key positions to be filled up at Camp Karoondinha for this summer. If you have outdoor skills and would be willing to teach them to some enthusiastic young scouts, please contact Matt Manning, the camp director at 570-419-0352.

Fish out time

OK, I admit it, I'm not exactly sure what a "fish out" is and is not; but it sure sounds like a good time. You and your family have been invited to join with the Trout Unlimited members for their "Spring Fishout" that will be held late next Wednesday afternoon at The Lodge along Penns Creek. This lodge was formerly known as "Johnson Lodge" and its on Lewis/Farrow Lane near Weikert. A meal will be served at 5 p.m. and then the anglers will head out to fish on Penns Creek or other nearby streams.
