H.S. girls track: Shikellamy relay turns disappointment into triumph in district meet

SELINSGROVE -- Sometimes disappointment can be a great motivating factor as half of the Shikellamy girls 1600 relay found out on Saturday afternoon at the District 4 Track and Field meet at Susquehanna University.

In the Class AAA meet, Shikellamy's freshman standout Treicy Cendeno couldn't overcome fellow freshman, Danville's Mackenzie Jones in the 3200 for the second consecutive week.

"I didn't do well (in the 3200) and I wanted to give it my all in the 1600 relay," Cedeno said.

With a gold medal in her pocket from the open 1600, Cedeno at least had already wrapped up a trip to next weekend's PIAA meet at Shippensburg University.

The Braves' junior anchor leg Kurstyn Pfleegor couldn't say the same after not getting out of the preliminaries in the 100 and finishing second in the open 400 without hitting the state qualifying time despite breaking a minute in the race for the first time this season.

"The same thing happened last year, except I did way worst in the 100 (this year); I stumbled out of the blocks. Second best, you're the first loser, I felt that way too many times," Pfleegor said. "I gathered the girls (before the race) because I knew this was my last chance for states, I got really sick of hearing 'you have next year, next year.' I didn't want to hear that one more time.

"I gathered the team around and said we've beaten the best teams in the area all year, and that doesn't matter if we don't win (today). You have to bring it here."

The Braves' 4x400 relay team did just that as the team of Cheyene Tumolo, Lexi Colescott, Cedeno and Pfleegor won the final race of the Class AAA meet in an area best 4:08.53.
