Women's basketball: Purdue defeats Penn State

STATE COLLEGE — Despite tying the school record for 14 blocks in a game, it wasn’t enough to slow down No. 21 Purdue, as the Boilermakers defeated the No. 14 Nittany Lions, 84-74, to give Penn State its first Big Ten home loss since 2012 (against Michigan State) on Sunday.

Courtney Moses scored 25 points to help Purdue pull off the upset.

Purdue (11-4, 1-2) — which lost its Big Ten opening games to Ohio State and Northwestern — was up 46-37 over Penn State (11-4, 2-1) at intermission.

In the second half, Moses put the Boilermakers in front 58-43, hitting a 3-pointer at 13:41.

Penn State clawed back and two free throws by Tori Waldner capped a comeback effort and the Lady Lions trailed Purdue by just two points, 68-66 with seven minutes to play.

On cue, Purdue intensified their efforts and ran off six straight points in taking a 74-66 lead into the final minutes. Kk Houser iced the victory for Purdue landing a jump shot and making four free throws in the final 1:16.

Penn State’s new football coach James Franklin was at the game and addressed the home crowd at the half.

Maggie Lucas led the charge for the Nittany Lions, scoring 17 points while grabbing down seven rebounds, dishing out an assist and swiping away a steal. Fellow senior Dara Taylor totaled 13 points and led Penn State with a team-best six assists.

Ariel Edwards had 12 points, six boards, four assists, two blocks and a steal in the loss.

The Nittany Lions opened the game by scoring the first seven points — the first five coming from Taylor. After the opening surge, Purdue battled back to grab its first lead with 10:18 to play off a layup from Whitney Bays to put the Boilermakers ahead, 19-18, outscoring the Nittany Lions 19-11 in the stretch.

The Boilermakers extended their lead to begin the second half by as many as 15, leading 60-45 with less than 13 to play.

Taylor reached 400 career points in the loss. Taila East also set a career-high with seven blocked shots.
