Seals, Green Dragons lead all-state selections

Selinsgrove juniors Nora Aucker and Emily Klingler, as well as Lewisburg freshman Cassie Sumfest, were among 11 girls from Valley schools who earned Pa. High School Field Hockey Coaches Association all-state recognition.

Aucker, Klingler and Sumfest were Class AA first-team honorees. There were 25 first-team picks.

Greenwood had a pair of second-team selections in seniors Lauren Fried (midfielder) and Hattie Kuhns (forward). Lewisburg senior forward Maddie Scarr and Selinsgrove junior back Megan Wetzel were also among the 24 Class AA second-team choices.

Honorable mention nods were given to 24 players, including Lewisburg backs Eliza Newlin, a senior, and Maggie Harrison, a junior, and the Selinsgrove forward pair of junior Brooke Zeiders and sophomore Lexi Horst.

Klinger, who was a second-team section in 2012, led the District 4-AA champion Seals with 21 goals and added seven assists.

Aucker, a tenacious player between the 25s who became a starter late in her freshman year, had nine goals and 10 assists.

Sumfest, a versatile player who is a member of the U.S. U-17 national team, tallied 16 goals and 10 assists in her first varsity season.

Scarr, a four-year starter, led the Valley with 27 goals with six assists. Wetzel, an excellent defender, had eight goals and four assists.

Kuhns helped Greenwood win its sixth consecutive Tri-Valley League championship with a team-high 13 assists and eight goals. Fried, the Wildcats ace mid, had pairs of goals and assists.

Newlin played stellar defense and added seven goals and six assists. Harrison, who shifted from back to midfield, had three goals and three assists.

Zeiders had a team-high 15 assists and 15 goals, including the overtime winner that gave Selinsgrove its ninth straight district title. Horst ranked second for the Seals with 17 goals and had four assists.
