The Daily Item
Name: Emily Crandell
High School: Mifflinburg

Lately: The 2010 Daily Item Player of the Year tossed her first collegiate shutout in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Millersville ... was named the PSAC East Pitcher of the week Monday ... Crandell (5-3) hasn’t allowed an earned run in her last 15 innings pitched.
Why I chose Mansfield: “One reason is softball, and the other reason is the people that I knew who were already going here. And they had my major. It was a place where you weren’t going to get lost in the crowd.”
Biggest adjustment to the college game: “The fact that I wasn’t going to start every game as a freshman. It was like, ‘You’re probably going to warm up, and you may or may not get in.’
“I think every freshman that is successful in high school that comes into college thinking that they’re going to start or be a star, they’re hit with that realization that you’re going to have to work hard to have the kind of success that you had in high school. ... There are going to be people who are older than you and better than you. I think every freshman struggles with that adjustment.”
Biggest surprise about the college game: My coaches (head coach Edith Gallagher and assistant Angie Hunley) surprised me because they became more than just my coach, the first person you thought of to go to with a problem is (Gallagher).
“She’s more than a coach: She’s a mom for everyone on the team. I know that’s not like that at all colleges. But she’s probably the best asset that Mansfield softball has.”
Advice for high school kids thinking of playing sports in college: “I would look at the people on the team and can they see themselves being friends with them. The people on the team become your family, and they become a big part of (college) beyond your sport.”
